Seriously Gorgeous Garages

Posted August 27, 2010 9:00 AM by CarDomain

Like a lot of people who are severely into cars, I've always found the idea of parking in my living room to be pretty appealing. So of all these beautiful high-dollar garages, the ones I like best are those that incorporate some kind of living space - from the loft above the immaculate bowties to the full-kitchen bar alongside the Italian exotics to the the little nook office with the view and the spiral staircase at the back of someone's rustic two-car.

In reality, though, true living-space garages – the ones where you literally drive your car into your home – might make it difficult to do anything more than light-duty tinkering. I like cooking almost as much as I like cars, but a kitchen full of diesel smoke would kill the appetite in a hurry. Anyway, I hope you'll check out CarDomain for a gallery of absolutely drool-worthy parking setups. Notwithstanding the cars that're in them, which garage do you like best?

"...which garage do you like best?"

Boy, I don't know which I like best. There isn't a dud in the bunch.

They are all over the top to me. Of those listed I liked the last one best.

The garage I have seen I really like the best is at the old Thomas Edison estate in NJ. The garage is nicely ornate cast concrete and has a turntable in the floor to allow one garage door to service several cars without a LOT of extra space ... I may be remembering wrong, but I think there was an apartment for the mechanic upstairs. Now that with a Baker Electric and a Tesla would be about right for what I would like :)

Actually, I didn't like ANY of those garages. Would you weld or cut steel in any of them? How about an oil change or lube job? Replace a rear axle in a truck? Engine swap? Nah, those are not garages, they are simply display cases for over-sized Matchboxes.

I agree entirely, these are showrooms not garages. I don't worship my car and want not want to share my living space with smelly and often damp and dripping vehicle.

Safety is also an issue. Here, in the UK there must be a step up from the garage to the rest of the dwelling to prevent the spread of split flammable liquids and have a 1 hour rated fire rated barrier to the rest of the dwelling. I always feel uneasy seeing garages in the US with ceilings that are the underside of floorboards above.

and since the removal of TEL the carcinogen benzene is now added to petrol, that would infiltrate into the rest of the house surely?
