Webcam and Program Used to Breach Student Privacy in the Home

Posted November 30, 2010 12:00 AM by Jaxy

Last year, a Philadelphia school district was accused of spying on students with webcams through district-issued MacBooks. It was recently stated (August 2010) that no charges would be filed as there was no criminal intent in the surveillance. The LanRev tracking program secretly installed on the laptops was intended to be activated only when a laptop was reported stolen or missing. In February, the district deactivated this software.

Background

Blake Robbins' laptop was never lost or stolen, yet the LanRev program was activated for a period of time between October 20th and November 4th, 2009. During this time, over 400 screen shots and webcam pictures were taken, most of which were in his home. Numerous screen-shots of private IM conversations were found in addition to many pictures of Robbins and other family members. Other students who never reported their laptop missing or stolen also had pictures taken of them in the "privacy" of their own homes.

Robbins also stated that he was accused by school officials for "improper behavior" based upon photos at his home using this software. The "improper behavior" was thought to be pill popping. His family states that he was eating Mike and Ike candy.

Concluding Thoughts

Thousands of pictures were taken from students homes while they were doing private things. Many images included partially dressed people and those who were sleeping in bed. While it could be argued that it is the schools computer to do whatever they want with, that seems to pale in comparison to the severe breach of privacy.

It has been argued in a few places on CR4 that schools shouldn't be a replacement for parents. What happens in the privacy of a students' home is definitely parental territory. Should a student be reprimanded for improper behavior at school for an act done in their home? Do schools have the right to have tracking software in student laptops in the first place? Does anyone have any suggestions on avoiding being spied on by webcams?

Nothing comes for free. A laptop given to someone from someone might always have something that one does not like.

I do think that a school should not spy on their students this way or any other way.

The stated reason for the install of the program sounds lame as there are better ways of securing a laptop.

From the standpoint of a user:

1. only switch the computer on when needed

2. only switch camera on when needed. If there is no hard or softswitch try blind the camera. certain good webcams come with a cover (why???)

3. only stay in the network as long as needed (in case of the student that will be all the time, but this opens door to much more threads then just somebody being able to spy on you...

4. make sure you know your system (even it comes from somewhere else or rather because it does) and you can eliminate, switch of any unwanted program.

6. keep on top of things and be aware of things going on on your machine.

Will this always help? NO! But it all comes with 90 percent chance (either failure or win -as live dictates it!)

PS That nobody will get charged for this seems odd as it is a big breach of privacy. People get shot for less than that when they show up personally in the home. They do not have to take photographs before the gun comes out ...

How can you be sure Apple or Dell or Acer or HP or some Chinese manufacturer has not installed the same secret software in your own personal laptop, and is monitoring your every move?

Since when does a claimed lack of criminal intent grant one immunity from the law? I think I'll rob a bank tomorrow in order to help the homeless on the street. I'll do it without any criminal intent. Wow, this could be the start of an exciting new career!

See that black dot above the screen? That's the built-in webcam. Who goes to sleep leaving the lid open? - automatic shut-down when lid is closed, and the lights at the sides of the camera come on when it's active.

Just a FYI "Last year, a Philadelphia school district was accused of spying on students with webcams through district-issued MacBooks."

It was not "Philadelphia school District" it was in the a suburbs outside Philly "Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County"

It was big news around here, the laptop was not reported stolen. the school district crossed the line. and a lawsuit pending if not several.

Jim C Thanks for clearing that up.

I was raised, live, and work in Philly and we already have enough bad press as it is, see the latest Christmas Village fiasco. ;-)>

Go Eagles!

You're right, with spying laptops, Christmas Village idiots, and Wikileaks wackos, it's becoming harder to want to continue to build a strong and proud country and future for our kids.

God bless the USA (Can I still say that?).
