Television is full of images of marred beaches, unemployed fishermen, and oil-drenched seabirds. Should we blame a greedy, careless oil company? Is it the fault of the federal regulatory agencies charged with overseeing offshore oil drilling? Or are the American people at fault? We perpetuate the dependence on cheap oil. Don't we have a consistent record at the ballot box for refusing to support genuine government regulation of the oil industry? Is one entity responsible for the Gulf spill, or are all to blame?
