Meet the Moderator and Blogger: mcgratp45

Posted October 17, 2010 5:01 PM by Jaxy

mcgratp45 loves to play piano, work out, swing dance, read (a lot), and generally spend time outside.

Tell me about yourself

I am a recent graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and currently working for GlobalSpec as both a web content technologist and data feed programmer. I chose electrical engineering as my major as I developed a liking for physics and science but also enjoy hands on laboratory work and developing new ideas.

Why did you choose to moderate/blog?

Like many of my fellow moderators, I chose to moderate because I want to clean up CR4 and make it more pleasant to read for both gurus and first time browsers. My decision to blog was due to the fact that I read and enjoyed blogs written by my colleagues. Upon further thought, blogging seemed to be an excellent way to not only keep track of things I chose to study on my own but a way to share them with my peers.

Favorite part about moderating/blogging?

My favorite part about blogging is observing the finished product when I have completed an entry, and watching my blog grow as I add material. Moderating has its moments, I definitely enjoy being able to help others use the website as well as some of the funny things that we sometimes come across as moderators.

Blogging topics: How do you choose?

Blog topics that tend to come most naturally are the ones that we are the most interested in. That is how I decide what to write. If I do not care about a topic or have very little interest in it, I will view it more as a homework assignment than something I want to do and it will not come across as interesting to me or the reader.

Favorite part about CR4?

CR4 is full of intelligent and interesting people, and I enjoy the witty sarcasm of some members and the insight of others.

One word that best describes you?

Inquisitive: I never allow myself to be spoon-fed anything; I always have to figure things out for myself. I have also made sure that I did not stop learning when college ended.

How or from whom did you learn about CR4?

Some of my colleagues at GlobalSpec and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute had a strong interest in CR4, so I naturally had to check it out for myself. I'm glad I did.

What would you say is the most interesting thing about you?

I'm not sure that I can pick something I value above all others, but some interesting things about me are:

1) I play many instruments by ear once I develop a rudimentary understanding of the fingering and sheet music

2) Most of the music I love is the favorite music of my friends' parents (Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, etc.)

Favorite website & why?

www.physicsworld.com

Updates on new literature related to science and physics.

Favorite Song/Album?

Texas Flood by Stevie Ray Vaughan is my favorite album. I love blues.

What are 5 things you can't live without?

1. My cat

2. The ability to learn/retain information

3. At least one person to confide in

4. Cheese

5. Books

Motto/Advice you live by?

"He who is fixed to a star does not change his mind." – Leonardo Da Vinci

Dear mcgratp45:

What was the inspiration behind the number 45 on your username? Just curious.

The 45 stems from the fact that I one day plan on having 45 cats. It only furthers the insight one gains into my personality upon glancing at my username.

Wow.

Reading a lot! What a 'curious' pasttime - ever read Tony Hillerman? Don't dismiss that (challenge?).

Stevie Ray... Well, I can only add "Welcome aboard."

And, as advice only:

(1) Moderate deftly, as there are numerous in this world AND THIS COMMUNITY who don't have a command of English (American, that is, the Brits need to learn English, you see, coloUr and all...), but who frequently have a significant contribution beyond that barrier. That leads to

(2) Patience is a virtue; complaisance a curse. READ posts, THEN moderate - well, moderately but decisively remembering (1) above, using FAQ, CR4 Rules, and a healthy dose of "... read (a lot)..."

(3) LEARN, then CONTRIBUTE. CR4 is the best there is, despite all the carping about Guests and their homework by those who can't seem to "pass" on an opportunity to belittle. Some people do porn late night, some do CR4; some seek escape, I - and many here - seek knowledge and endure the minor abuse by students.

(4) When you move on, don't leave "us" behind. You will move on, and so will we IF the community continues to share, to learn from each other, and therefore to become better by the perseverance of its members to make it so.

(5) Visit Austin, see Pease Park and the bronze there of Stevie Ray; experience Zilker and Barton Springs; take 360 out west and then see Mt Bunnell (sp?) at sunset. DEVELOP THE ATTITUDE - we can only get better TOGETHER.

(6) In case I didn't say it forcefully before, WELCOME ABOARD.
