Sea Squirt Regrows Entire Body from One Blood Vessel

Our closest invertebrate relative, the humble sea squirt, can regenerate its entire body from just tiny blood vessel fragments, scientists now report. The entire regeneration process, which in part resembles the early stages of embryonic development, can produce an adult sea squirt in as little as a week.

So cloning fully grown human adults in short time is not so far in the future. Have you guys seen "The Island" movie? It might become reality soon.

I've been brainstorming about how organisms grow and age and I recall reading about how the entropy of isolated systems increases. All biological systems are based on cells and every thing from cells to whole organisms can be represented as systems that are mostly isolated within spherical containers. As long as the container keeps growing, increasing in volume, it keeps the entropy of the system inside low. As soon as the container stops growing, the entropy inside increases until the system fails.

This, I think, is the reason why people age. As soon as we stop growing our bodies begin to deteriorate as the entropy within increases. The process is much slower for organisms than it is for simpler containers like cells because the increasing entropy of a mature (adult) organism can be slowed down by the growth of new cells within it. This is why preservatives are unhealthy- they inhibit the replacement of large old cells with new small cells that can grow and reduce the entropy of our bodies thus causing us to age faster and die sooner.

Old cells are constantly being replaced by new cells which are canstantly being supplied by a steady stream of adult stem cells which are produced in our bone marrow. This enables us to live many times longer than we would otherwise- 7 years I guess. So, the best application of the sea squirt's (or any animal's) regenerative abilities in human biology would be in the production of adult stem cells. In the best case senario, we could extend the lives of our decendants by many decades. Perhap even centuries. In the wrost case, we could end up inventing a new form of leukemia.
