Dog Poo Powers a Streetlight In Massachusetts Park

Posted September 13, 2010 1:46 PM

From Popular Science - New Technology, Science News, The Future Now:

Good dog parents might think they're doing their part by using biodegradable baggies to pick up after their pooches. But after Fido's feces go in the trash can and to a landfill, they release methane gas, a significant contributor to the greenhouse effect. A dog park in Cambridge, Mass., has a solution: Add in a methane digester, and let your dog waste power the streetlights, tea cart and popcorn machine.

And a sewage plant in SE England has recently converted its methane-powered turbine to natural gas because it no longer reclaims the methane from the sewage it treats....

That's NOT a solution.

Recapture the methane from biodegradeables at the landfill. It's the only economical solution.

How "green" is this idea? Tanks? cranks? food vendors? Give me a break..

NOT ONE BIT!

A junk science shakedown..

Crap.. if you will

..but the message is don't!

What a waste of money and effort. This is a perfect of example of something that makes people feel good, it doesn't do good.

Consider how much natural material ends up decaying in swamps, marshes, bogs, and wet areas all over the world creating methane gas, and these bozos are worried about a few hundred pounds of dog crap.

They would be better off dumping the dog crap into a toilet into Boston's sewers where the waste goes over to the Deer Island waste treatment plant where it gets converted into methane and burned to support the waste water treatment operations.

Ah, but Cambridge is our own little bit of Berkley on the East Coast.
