Food Fight?

Posted September 18, 2010 7:32 AM

Bioplastics are the wave of the future, based on a switch from oil-based to renewable feedstocks. Different commodities will serve as feedstock for polymer production, including sugar cane, sugar beets, algae, and corn stalks. What are the implications of diverting crops away from food supply? Is there capacity to grow enough crops to feed the world's population and create necessary plastic products?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Plastics Fabrication, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Plastics Fabrication today.

How much of a necessity is plastic production that it supersedes food production for humans ?

And doesn't this already exist with crops like corn that are already being diverted from food to fuel production ?

This always has affects on food prices and anything that uses things like High Fructose Corn Syrup which is almost everything by the way.

So when do food shortages become a concern then. When there are no more people to use those precious plastic products ?

If there is an attempt to use "bioplastics", the only upswing would be if it fully biodegrades.
