Genetically Engineered Protein from Corn Found in Waterways

Posted September 29, 2010 11:43 AM

From USATODAY.com Technology News:

A study of streams in Indiana found that the insecticidal proteins produced by genetically modified corn ended up in 23% of tested waterways in amounts above detectible limits. Corn genetically-modified to produce a mild insecticide has a gene added from a soil bacteria called bacillus thuringiensis. It is widely planted in the United States, making up 85% of the 2009 corn U.S. crop. The insecticidal protein the corn produces, used to ward off the European corn borer, is Cry1Ab.

Good to know it wasn't found below detectable limits anyway!

The more we learn about the effects of GM, the I don't like them or feel safe with them. I kayak those Indiana streams and rivers.

This is among the most silly sh*t I read about - people generally have no idea what so ever what a GMO is - nothing except the garbage greenpeace, sierra club, EWG and others of that ilk put out.

We could continue to do it the old way where chemicals or radiation were used to break random DNA. Totally random results with a 1 in a million chance of anything useful coming and just as good of a chance of a bad trait being developed. This was done for many years but the fruitcakes concerned citizens screaming about GMO didn't even know what was being done so no problem.
