First U.S. Offshore Wind Farm Gets a Step Closer

Posted October 08, 2010 8:36 AM

From Fast Company:

After nine years of political wrangling, the U.S. is finally getting its first offshore wind project. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar this week signed the 28-year lease for Cape Wind, a $1 billion, 130-turbine project in the Nantucket Sound that could provide up to 75% of all electricity for Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. But the signing of the lease isn't the last hurdle Cape Wind has to clear. It's not even close.Opponents of the the 25 square mile project argue that Cape Wind could raise electricity prices for local residents (because of the cost of electrical grid and transmission line improvements), block airplane radar, and ruin the local landscape.

... and ruin the local landscape? I'm not sure that oil rigs are any more attractive. I bet ppl in the gulf coast aren't too pleased with their local landscape right now. I think it sounds like a step in the right direction!

It does appear to be a fait accompli. I guess we can let them try this experiment here. I'm not much a fan of the idea because I have serious doubts they will be economically viable. The marine environment is notoriously difficult. I expect they will have maintenance nightmares 5-10 years after commissioning. I know this much, I wouldn't invest a dollar of my money in this venture.
