Expansive Hoover Dam Bridge Opens

Posted October 18, 2010 8:29 AM

From Discovery News - Top Stories:

America's greatest technological achievement, the Hoover Dam, now has a soaring companion piece, a massive looming bridge held up by the longest arch in the Western Hemisphere. The Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, which opened this month and connects the U.S. states of Arizona and Nevada, spans the vast chasm 890 feet above the Colorado River that is controlled by the dam.

Thats a wonderful example of engineering and worth it to get the traffic off the dam. One thing that puzzles me is the article keeps on referring to pounds, feet, etc. - the rest of the world has gone over to metric yet the USA doesn't seem to want to follow - is there a reason?

.....the rest of the world has gone over to metric......

You are relatively new to CR4..........however you will find out that "America is the rest of the world"........did you know they have their very own atmosphere........in several states you can buy R12 a CFC (banned in many parts of the world) and recharge their own auto air conditioning..........and whatever else they do, e.g. the problems associated with the hole in the ozone layer..........doesn't affect USA

Mind you Australia's government is just as hypocritical, they ban all these CFC's, etc.,and we are the largest exporter of coal in the world and most of is a poor grade brown coal and they send it to India and China to burn it in cheap, polluting power stations. We even use the so called "new" refrigerants that have zero ODP, but, their GWP is 1500-3000 times that of CO2 ..........R22 which is a CHFC is also on its way to being banned............no HVAC units using R22 to be manufactured freon Jan 1st this year......I wonder!!!!!! We still have foreign ships using Halon 1301, and other CFC's, in fixed fire fighting installations.

God made us different. We respect others differences but do not see the need to change. We are taught the metric along with what we call our standard system. have a good day!
