Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

The Ultimate Motorcycle: Brough Superior?

Posted November 04, 2010 9:00 AM by dstrohl

"A number of manufacturers have sought to produce the ultimate motorcycle, a machine with that intangible blend of performance, handling, quality, looks and that little something extra that places it above and beyond its competitors. A number have got close, but have not been able to make the transition from contemporary ultimate to achieving an enduring status as the pinnacle of desirability, that accolade falls to two manufacturers, Brough Superior and Vincent." - Catalog Description

Last Friday, H&H sold a 1926 Brough Superior SS100 for £286,000, which was $448,155.74 in Friday's dollars. Are you kidding me? Okay, bike people, this is your chance: I want to know what it is about this thing that makes it worth as much as a Hemi 'Cuda, 300 SL or Miura.

If it was good enough for T.E. Lawrence, it has to be good...Apparently, he owned about seven of these, including the one that led to his untimely death...

I remember an aquaintance of mine in the 60s, buying one and finding out that it had once belonged to T.E.L., it increased its value many times instantly (I have no recollection of any of the values, its too long ago......but was a lovely bike eventually......though i never got the chance to actually ride it - sadly.

The owner of a Brough Superior, or a Black lightning might look down his nose and ask what makes a Hemi 'Cuda so valuable.

I was riding down The Great West Road on my Calthorpe, when a Black Shadow went flying by but the beat of it's engine only just matched that of my heart. He had hit an oil patch and spread himself over the back of a milk tanker when I got further down the road.
