Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

The Morgan Threewheeler Rides Again

Posted November 17, 2010 9:00 AM by dstrohl

The success of the Morgan Motor Company was based on the success of an icon, the Morgan Threewheeler. A brilliant but simple design by engineer Harry Morgan became one of the most successful lightweight cars in the early days of motoring. From 1909 to 1953, around 30,000 Morgan Threewheelers were built in England. Rapid acceleration and a cruising range of over 50 mpg was an unbeatable combination back in the day.

The world is a very different place today, but the Morgan Motor Company plans to sell the threewheeler again in 2011. So what's different? How about a Screaming eagle 1800 cc engine from Harley-Davidson and a Mazda 5-speed gearbox for starters.

Thought you'd like that. After seeing your recent drawings/concept plans.

This is right up your alley!

Cheers, Tony

DO IT!

But please change the motor. I have built and ridden hundreds of bikes, and the ol' 60 deg twin makes the least power of them all. The compensator is also responsible for throwing most of the torque overboard in the form of heat. Hugely inefficient. How about a 90 deg twin? Or an I4? So many better choices out there.

True that nothing rides like a Harley. I've ridden my share of Buells too. Fun, torque monsters. But they all run out of huff too soon.

Hey, without the Harley engine, it's just British. Give me the Boom Boom Boom of the Harley any day. In this case, we're only justifing fun-not technical aspects. It won't be long before I have to give up riding my Harley two wheeler. This 3 wheeler could get me into my final twilight years.
