Nothing new about this. Back in the day while serving in the US Army we used to cook with Thermite all the time while on maneuvers, especially when we were up in AK......crazy Engineers that we were!

Another cooking tip, especially if you wanted to thaw out your MRE ("Meal Rejected by Enemy": one way to put it politely), we'd take the entree bag unopened and stuff it down the exhaust stack of one of the trucks....after about 30 seconds the driver would gun the engine and out popped the MRE entree bag toasty hot! The plastic would get so hot it'd burn your fingers...
