What's the Fastest Police Car?

Posted December 03, 2010 8:30 AM by CarDomain

There is quite the survival-of-the-fittest battle raging on between a few would-be police cruisers at the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

One of the competitors is the Taurus-based AWD Ford Police Interceptor. With a twin-turbo, direct-injected, 3.5L EcoBoost V6, it ran the quickest lap, beating out the V8-powered offerings of Dodge and Chevy, and going from 0-60 mph in an impressive 5.8 seconds! It wasn't made specifically clear who was beat out by the quick V6, but some good guesses are the Caprice and Charger.

The Police Interceptor Utility sporting a 3.7L V6, based on of the upcoming 2011 Ford Explorer, also beat out the Chevy Tahoe by a full two seconds during a lap. Both SUV's were laden with 400-lb cargo boxes during testing.

Powered by the standard Ford 3.5L V6, the Interceptor Utility beat out the other V6 competition in braking, accelerating, handling and lap times. In addition to exhibiting great performance and durability during testing, it also made decent fuel economy, better than the outgoing Crown Victoria by 20%.

Is this competition open to international entries?

Let's hope NOT!

Any politician who makes such a decision to buy foreign cars for a domestic force should be tarred and feathered.

I'm not going into a speech on saving our internal industries but we better pull our heads out of their annal storage and fix whats wrong with our country.

WE had a local police chief almost lose his job for even suggesting such a thing. Hurray for common sense!

We have some fast cars here, I can recall rather hot BMW 3 & 5 series cars used for specialist pursuit units in the bigger urban areas, saw a police Audi A6 the other day moving at quite a few knots. Over here, we don't really care where the car is made - if it cannot catch the thief/murderer/hi-jacker (car-jacker?), etc., it is of no use, period. But most of the "normal" police cars are much slower, as not all are into pursuit applications. In fact, the bulk here is made up of LDVs/light trucks of the major Japanese brands, due to the roads we have.

Hi gideon, I agree with you, but you don't have to "graze" on foreign fields: there are some magnificent Cadillac cars: from every point of view those could do a helluva good job. They have the looks, they have the muscle-why not consider those?

They don't need high speed cars in Los Angeles 'cause they are always doing slow speed chases! Every few months (on slow news days) they show us one here in Colorado. Besides, high speed chases are way to dangerous. Just have the troopers down the road throw out one of those 'strips of nails' across the road. That will do the trick.

Hi folks, wow, what hair-rising speeds! My grandma could do 5.8 secs to 0-60! Without a v6 nor v8. Come on, US Police Dept., can't you do better? Giving wheelchairs to the troops would do better-at least they would get some exercise, too.

0 to 60 in 5.8 seconds is a dog. now take a Chrysler police car from around 1970 to 1972. now you are talking. the answer to your question is the police car that is a few miles behind my ZO6 and falling back by the second, and i am getting 24 mpg

Probably the fastest were the Dodge Magnum 440s from the Sixties. They were on a mission from God. The article is about quickest and best handling.

dollar for dollar the best bang for the buck , an AMERICAM made ZR-1. You know, the 1 the German and Italian car makers put down all year, but is the first car they go after first every new model year.
