Tiltrotor is One Wacky Helicopter

Posted March 15, 2007 3:32 PM

From Gizmodo:

The picture is of a crazy helicopter concept by Baldwin Technology. Designed to lift heavy object, it can bust out wings, tilt its prop forward, and turn from a helicopter into a pseudo-plane for faster travel. Will it ever get made? Beats be, but it sure looks neat. Check the video after the jump (viewed best with no sound) to see an animation of it in action.

If I recall the US military had a tilt wing plane built in the 1960s. It had four engines on a fully tilting wing and looked just like a small Hercules. It was probably ahead of its time then, but with fly by wire controls and better engines and props it would be a useful tool in many areas now.

Thanks for the link Looks to be a nice design.

Interesting that it does not tilt the wing, just the engine / rotor assemblies?

Similar idea to the Harrier Jump Jet - that just redirected the exhaust flow.

Has no-one noticed that the concept will not fly if the rotors are angled forward at the proposed 90degrees?

Especially with the wings off, there is not enough lift produced to keep it airborne - even the bumble bee has better lift.
