Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Europe's second-biggest airline,
plans to be the first commercial carrier to test using biofuels for commercial flights.
The airline will use a 50-50 mix of kerosene and biofuel for six-months
beginning in April 2011. The fuel will be biomass-to-liquid (BTL) fuel that
will come from a sustainable supply and production process under Neste Oil in
Finland.
The test will be run using an Airbus A321 that will fly from
Hamburg to Frankfurt, and will seek to understand the long-term effects that
using biofuels may have on engine maintenance and lifespan. Although the test
is being conducted using only one of the aircraft's engines, Lufthansa
estimates that they will save 1,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
What do you think Lufthansa will find during their biofuel
test?
