Vehicle Warning System Trialled

Posted March 17, 2007 8:11 PM

From BBC News | Technology | World Edition:

Vehicles may soon be swapping information about road conditions to warn drivers about jams and dangers. A German research project on show at hi-tech trade fair Cebit envisions a peer-to-peer network for vehicles on a road passing data back and forth. Cars or bikes experiencing problems would pass data that would ripple down the chain of vehicles behind them. Information would be conveyed to drivers via a dashboard screen or through a mobile phone headset. Dr Anselm Blocher - a researcher at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence who is co-ordinating the project - said the ad hoc communication system could mean that drivers found out about dangers or jams ahead much more quickly than they do now. For spotting dangers and jams, the system would use data from sensors that were likely to be fitted to cars, bikes and trucks in the future, Dr Blocher added.

Could bring a whole new meaning to a computer crash.

I don't know if I like the idea of every car around me being able to track me or not. A few modifications could probably convert it into a tracking devise.

How long will it be before just let the car do all our days work. They keep adding junk, the only things that have been improvements on cars are the electric starter, hydraulic brakes, speed control and cup holders. We must have cup holders at every seat?? All the rest of the items are to overcome bad driving. Click and clack had an interesting call a guys throttle stuck and he is speeding along, cut off the ignition?? can't because you have to be in Park. Soon we will get into a padded suit like astronauts when we drive.

Let me see if I understand...

We're going to have lines of cars speeding along the superhighway, with everyone looking out through their rear windows to see how trailing car drivers, looking down at their instruments, are responding to the unseen situation up ahead?!

And if cars and bikes were able to "experience" problems, what to do about those that went psychopathic? Worse yet, a psychopath car driven by a sane driver!
