House Made of Shipping Pallets

Architects Andreas Claus Schnetzer and Pils Gregor designed "Slumtube" — an affordable house built out of discarded shipping pallets and insulated with clay and straw. It's designed to be comfortable in the widely-varying temperatures of Johannesburg, South Africa.

I burn around 1200 wood pallets a year for firewood and I can easily say to there being some very high quality wood many of them. Oak, Ash, Various Pine, and redwoods are the most common but I have seen some made out of other types of woods that are very pretty when cleaned up.

Granted the vast majority of it is in 2 x 4 form and under 4 feet long but not all is that way!

How do you get them down to size for your boiler?

chainsaw or do you have a shredder?

I've made some nice stuff from oak & even mahogany decking from pallets

I use a 12 inch 5 HP electric chop saw with a commercial grade demolition blade.

I split them crosswise into roughly 12 - 16 inch sections and feed them in that way.

Its easy work if you have the right tools!
