A team of bioengineers in the United States have modified a strain of bacteria to increase its ability to produce ethanol. The research, published in Biotechnology and Bioengineering, reveals how adaptation and metabolic engineering can be combined for strain improvement, a positive development for the biofuel industry.

I thought that there was some modified variant of Ecoli or something similar that was developed several years ago that did just that.

Your prob'ly right. Surely it's the way to go, tho', concentrating on getting fuel from the stuff that would otherwise be waste, rather that using foodstuffs?

Maybe I missed something - I'm no biochemist.
