Rapidly Developing Countries Are Innovation Champions

From Scientific American:

The idea that poorer countries should catch up economically with wealthier ones before spending heavily on R&D was challenged by a report released last week. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report contradicts theories widely held by development professionals and international organizations such as the World Bank.

I think there may be another surprise in store for those clinging to the belief that the developed world has a natural advantage over the less fortunate in developing new technologies and products. It will be increasingly difficult for engineers in the developed world to conceive the products that will fill the needs of people who live in a style so alien to their own experience.
