To Print or Not to Print?

Posted December 27, 2010 7:00 AM

Ostensibly to avoid unnecessary printing of documents and generate awareness of paper use, World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) is promoting its WWF file format. Using software available from the group, the print function is blocked, so PDFs are read-only. Is this another way to "protect us from ourselves"? Will you download the complimentary software or continue to print as usual?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Environmental Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Environmental Technology today.

What a bunch of silliness!! Not a chance I'll use such software. And just in case I want to print a .WWF file I've got my trusty screen capture software which hasn't been foiled yet. Just a bit more editing effort.

Looks like the World Wide Fund for Nature is running out of ways to spend their endowment money and justify the salaries of their paid staff.

The great irony of what they are doing will come when they decide to put their message in that unprintable format whereby it will be lost all the sooner in the exponentially growing sea of internet data. Perhaps they should change their name to the "Ephermeral World Wide Fund for Nature".

In the US and Canada these clowns are still called the World Wildlife Fund. So you are not so far off on the name change shenanigans.

This is just plain silly. These folks must have stayed up all morning to come up with such a good idea. There are plenty of options available for free (like Cute PDF Writer) to archive documents in PDF format. This saves money in printing costs and additional file cabinet storage space. It's also 'good for the environment'. But if I find I need a paper copy at some point I can still print it.

So no, I won't download the complimentary software. I will continue to avoid printing as much as possible, and I don't need gimped software to do so. I wonder what Adobe's lawyers think about this?

How do they convey the message to the computer illiterate?

If there's a document that is important enough that I want to secure a permanent copy, I print a hard copy as well as a pdf. As in, what do I really want a copy of, in case of some catastrophic loss of electronic data or access.

There are no documents from WWF that I need to print afaik, so I am happy for them that they are preventing people from wasting their ink and paper on it. I would be sorry to see other people using this, but as Ed pointed out, if I really want a copy, there are ways.

I do my best research at work when I'm in the bathroom taking a dump. I'll stick with paper and Charmin.
