Last week, Google launched "Earth Engine," a new platform
that uses current and historical satellite imagery to monitor and track the
environment. According to their official
blog post, the number of images archived for this project is massive in
scale and includes many previously unseen pictures. The system allows scientists
to use the search engine's large-scale cloud-computing infrastructure to
analyze the imagery.
Google says that Earth Engine will enable scientists around
the world to access and track information regarding societal changes, the
locations and size of global forests and how they are changing over time, potential
options for directing resources during disaster response, disease mitigation and
for water resource mapping.
Do you see potential uses for Earth Engine?
