Google Unveils “Earth Engine”

Last week, Google launched "Earth Engine," a new platform that uses current and historical satellite imagery to monitor and track the environment. According to their official blog post, the number of images archived for this project is massive in scale and includes many previously unseen pictures. The system allows scientists to use the search engine's large-scale cloud-computing infrastructure to analyze the imagery.

Google says that Earth Engine will enable scientists around the world to access and track information regarding societal changes, the locations and size of global forests and how they are changing over time, potential options for directing resources during disaster response, disease mitigation and for water resource mapping.

Do you see potential uses for Earth Engine?

I don't doubt that there will be lots of uses for it, but I wonder about a google = god effect; i.e., users will depend entirely on google's data and any information not on google, including 'real world, physical data' and contrarian data, will effectively cease to exist.

Hopefully it will work as a public access data center further help people do more complete and accurate cross checks of the works published into the mainstream media that are presently used more for scare tactics and hype than for being honest and/or true scientific information.

Wonder if they can go back at least couple of centuries, so that the site doesn't get hijacked by the "Climate Change" enthusiasts? (Joke) Taking data from the last 30 or 40 years and comparing it to current conditions could lead to some strange extrapolations, especially in the Earth Sciences! Did the dinosaurs have a good satellite system?, or did that go extinct too? Other uses would seem to be helpful.
