How Good Does a Feel Good Factor Feel?

Posted January 07, 2011 7:22 AM

A contract manufacturer bought two new presses in part to boost staff morale. The machines are hard at work now, but the tactic begs a question or two. If generating a 'feel good' factor among employees is a real boost to manufacturing efficiency then what is the most effective thing your company has done to achieve just that recently? Alternatively what might do so now? Visible new investment, a profit-sharing scheme, a better canteen, or maybe just a pat on the back for a job well done? What makes people feel good at work and about their work?

More money is good. A pat on the back is usually appreciated. Promotions are also usually appreciated, but sometimes that sort of backfires. The number one, all time, everyone wants it truly favorite morale booster:

Good old fashioned Time Off With Pay.

This can manifest as extra vacation days, reward or spiff type system, it does not seem to matter: Time Off With Pay has ALWAYS improved employee satisfaction.
