Is There a Plastic Preferred over PVC?

Posted January 09, 2011 7:27 AM

Phthalate-plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) medical devices have been subject to critical concern, largely due to perceived health and environmental risks. Little progress seems to have been made in finding cost-effective substitute materials. Have you experienced market or customer pressures to transition away from using PVC? Do you think there's a need for an alternative material?

PVC makes fine chassis walls for a medical device but it provides absolutely no electrostatic shielding by itself. PVC also make great plumbing for medical waste. I would be very apprehensive of using PVC in contact with anything that enters the body.

There are many ways that something can be used in a medical application. It would help if you told us how you intend to use this PVC material?

Hi all

I'm making a bag which lays between the mattress and sheet for lifting a patent and I was advised that PVC for this application is frowned upon and I should use a non chlorinated plastic. This may be of interest:

(Sorry a can't get the link to work, I preferred the previous version for writing comments)

your browser is probably the reason you're having trouble with links

proper link

a proper active link looks like

{link url="http://www.healthybuilding.net/pvc/SortingOutVinyls.html"} except with [] instead of {} the text you want to have displayed followed by {/link}
