Regulatory Chokehold on Medtech Innovation?

Posted December 25, 2010 7:00 AM

The U.S. Federal Drug Administration's (FDA) regulatory regime hampers innovation and adversely impacts patient care. Regulatory inefficiencies result in a longer wait for U.S. patients relative to their European counterparts for products made by U.S. medical device firms. For low- and moderate-risk devices, the process to navigate the FDA took companies up to two years longer for approval than for a similar clearance from European regulators. Are your experiences similar to these survey results from more than 200 small- and medium-sized medical tech companies?

This will always be a delicate balancing act that really should not be pushed too hard by people out of the appropriate medical loop. People need hope that medical treatments can be found that will help their conditions, but they can be also harmed by false hope. There are triumphs and tragedies on both sides of holding back and early release of medical treatments. Let's not forget about the complications that happened from thalidomide or the questionable value to laetrile in cancer treatments. Compounding the problem of finding a drug that is effective is the recent study that found that patients that knowingly took a placebo (Yes, the subjects knew that the pills contained no medication) still had a significant positive effect.

So why is it we see about one recall per month? The pharms barely self regulate themselves as it is. You are lucky the FDA is there at all or there would be plenty more recalls and plenty more deaths. If large corporations had morals maybe we wouldn't need regualtions.
