3D is here, but are we ready for it? When confronted with 3D displays and virtual-reality game systems, "people sensitive to visual disorders and susceptible to motion sickness suffer symptoms ranging from nausea to seizures," warns Clemson University psychologist Eric Muth (who spent years working on helmet-mounted displays for the Navy). He cautions that more research is needed into side-effects of the displays — but in the rush to market, we are unlikely to get it. Have the human factors been sufficiently thought out? Have you felt motion sick from playing immersive games or watching 3D displays? Should we be concerned about side effects on an unknown percentage of people, as 3D images spread everywhere (including in public ads)?
