Google Unveils Conversation Mode for Translate App

Posted January 13, 2011 11:21 AM

From New Scientist - Online News:

The universal translator is here - if you don't mind huddling around your phone to carry on the conversation. English-speaking Android owners can now converse in Spanish thanks to a new version of Google's Translate app. The experimental Conversation Mode, currently only in "alpha" testing, analyses English speech and reads out a computerised Spanish translation. I am not sure if this is the greatest app since sliced bread or if it will delay a Darwinistic movement of languages to universality. I do like the idea and see lots of advantages; especially, if other languages get involved. French-English in Canada would be nice but almost the same can be said between other languages. I can't wait to try Chinese, Japanese, Urdu, etc. It will be interesting to see how the English-Russian app solves the article issue. The Russian language does not have articles, so maybe we get translation with accents.
