A Biomass Dichotomy

Posted January 26, 2011 7:00 AM

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is deferring greenhouse gas permitting requirements for carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from biomass-fired and other biogenic sources for three years. Even though biofuel combustion emits CO2, biomass burning will be permitted in the interim as a form of greenhouse gas emissions-control technology in fossil-fueled facilities. EPA explains this seeming conflict by contending that more time is needed to "weigh the science." How can biofuels be included in a national energy mix without regard to environmental impact?

It is really interesting that there is this great cloud of pollution over central Asia that is now attributed to the excess use of "biofuels"- burning wood or cow chips or such for cooking, etc. in Africa...

Food prices are already setting records world wide. Do we really want to divert agricultural production to meet energy needs while the number of hungry people in the world is increasing?

I think of it as a good time to grow extreme weather crops that dont normally grow in an area where the weather conditions were mild .and the sooner they start the experimental farming crops and put in the cold weather navy beans ,seeds or rice (for flooded areas)in the ground the better.

Also I had commented last month about those Asian Carp being a Godsend that some people were seeing as a threat ,and then thousands of warm weather fish died. plus the Asian Carp were as good as Chilean Sea Bass.

Maybe If the plants could run underground hoses from the emitters of the smells

to an area where the heat could be accessed by using that new underground

geothermal energy application It would save the Industrys money instead.ds
