Safe and Secure?

Posted January 31, 2011 7:06 AM by Sharkles

How concerned are you about the physical security of your facility? A 2010 survey of 212 hospitals conducted by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety found that hospital crime of all types is rising. A 200% increase in four categories of violent crime was posted during 2004-2009. Have new security measures or training procedures been implemented at your facility in response to these trends?

This is really surprising considering the nation crime rates (violent and otherwise) have been on a steady decline since the early 1990s.

US Crime Statistics 1960 - 2009

So, the question is what are hospitals doing different or how has the environment changed for hospitals?

Also, are there statistics showing that crime, while declining as a whole, is shifting to corporate properties? Maybe the way they are measuring is changing?
