Will You Let Customers in on Product Development?

Posted January 27, 2011 2:04 PM by Sharkles

As companies continue to adapt to and do business online, the medium provides new opportunities for reaching new and existing customers and allowing them to participate with the brand. Hewlett-Packard is company who has embraced this idea, and is now bringing end users into the product testing stage.

The HP Product Test website seeks users to evaluate prototype products in their homes and offices. There are two programs: beta and delta. The beta testing is done on products that are functional, but still in the design phase. This program allows users to give feedback on their needs and behaviors as they relate to the product.

Delta testing focuses on the overall experience with an HP product, including: installation, everyday use, support, and service. This stage of testing is done right before a product is available for purchase and attempts to address issues and concerns before it goes to market.

In the article "Looking Forward: The Future of Product Testing," Amalia Agathou writes that customers who are involved with companies during development processes are more likely to remain loyal.

Do you agree with customers participating on early development testing? Do you agree with the idea that this will encourage brand loyalty?

Gosh, Whirlpool, for example, has been doing this for decades. This really isn't something new.

Obviously, since it is the customer that pays the bill, it makes sense to at least build what the customer needs and in some cases what they want; even if it isn't something they will use.

The only thing really new is the language and today they call it being "Customer Centric", which translates to keeping the customer satisfied.

End products that requires constant user interventions and manipulations, it is imperative to gather and incorporate end-users input into the design processes in order to come up with a more user-friendly products. Such measures help avoid or minimize most future user-related errors and problems.

Hi Sharkles,

If you don't consult your customers who will buy the product(s) you put on the marketplace? They use it and they know what's wrong and/or good withit, isn't it?

I make something that customers can use and they tell me what's good or bad with it, and I correct to test again up to the final and acceptable level.

I have no ago or wants and needs. My actual and future customers have and only they pay for all my bills, I just sign the cheques. So, I let them do the work for me, and themselves. Everyone must listen to a customer, Gil.
