Smart Makes First U.S. Delivery

Posted February 02, 2011 8:00 AM by Sharkles

The first electric smart car in the United States was recently delivered to Mindy Kimball in Silver Spring, Maryland. The vehicle is the first of 250 electric vehicles (EVs) to be leased to individuals and corporate fleets in the United States this year while the Smart works to refine the technology. Major production of these vehicles is stated for 2012.

The EVs are Smart's ForTwo Electric Drive vehicles, which were developed with help from Tesla motors. These drives feature a 30 kilowatt (40 horsepower) electric motor and a 16.5 kWl lithium-ion battery. Smart estimates that the battery pack is good for 98 miles, while the EPA cites the real-world figure of 63 miles. According to Wired, the battery is fully-charged in 8 hours when plugged into a 220 volt socket.

Are you looking forward to seeing more electric vehicles come to market?

Suppose you live in Chicago and are trapped on Lake shore Drive, unable to move during a bad snowstorm.

How long could you expect to stay warm?

Well assuming a fully charged pack and using about 1kW for your little heater - just under 16 hours.

It probably takes only a few hundred watts or less to stay warm. I once added an electric windshield de-icer to an old car. It drew about 500 watts and warmed up the car's interior pretty well, too. I would turn it on for a couple of minutes before starting the car.

Anybody know the actual cost per mile to run (including periodic battery replacement) of the newest model releases? How about the emissions per KW-hr of the coal & oil fired generators?

I could possibly see these for the "short commute to & from work" market once (and if) the prices drop. Replacing the ICE is a future possibility unless fuel cells or other technology overcomes it.
