The first electric smart car in the United States was
recently delivered to Mindy Kimball in Silver Spring, Maryland. The vehicle is
the first of 250 electric vehicles (EVs) to be leased to individuals and
corporate fleets in the United States this year while the Smart works to refine
the technology. Major production of these vehicles is stated for 2012.
The EVs are Smart's ForTwo Electric Drive vehicles, which
were developed with help from Tesla motors. These drives feature a 30 kilowatt
(40 horsepower) electric motor and a 16.5 kWl lithium-ion battery. Smart estimates that the battery pack is good for 98 miles,
while the EPA cites the real-world figure of 63 miles. According to Wired, the
battery is fully-charged in 8 hours when plugged into a 220 volt socket.
Are you looking forward to seeing more electric vehicles
