Cryogenic Energy Storage Plant Could Provide Valuable Back-Up

Posted February 22, 2011 10:21 AM

From The Engineer:

The UK's first cryogenic power storage plant, which uses liquid nitrogen to store and release energy, is scheduled to open next month. Its operator, Highview Power Storage, said the system could provide a relatively cheap way of storing power, particularly from intermittent sources such as wind turbines, to better match the supply of electricity to demand.

Storing energy cryogenicaly? WTF? Cryogenics is the action of removing as much energy from a physical medium as possible. You know cold being the absence of energy.

Getting an education in politics would only be a slightly worse example of opposites being used to describe something..

I designed a windmill using this type of storage. It actually uses the transformation processes to store energy to do work. Especially in summer when tapping the energy storage you absorb heat.
