Sniper Detecting Microphones Becoming More Popular for US Soldiers

Posted February 22, 2011 1:27 PM

From Singularity Hub:

Small lightweight microphones are saving the lives of US soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. Shoulder Worn Acoustic Targeting Systems (SWATS), developed by defense company QinetiQ, use shockwave and muzzle blast noise to locate enemy gunfire . A single shot is all it takes to give the soldier the bearing and distance to the sniper trying to take his life. A tactical display or audio alert from the device tells the soldier where to look so they can return fire or take cover. With SWATS, you go from sitting duck to well-informed angry defender in less than a second.

I love the jingoistic tone of this article. Would it work as well if it said..

"Local freedom fighters combating an aggressive invader are being targeted by the technical devilry of a huge industrial country. Poor under trained heroes daily put their lives on the line to save their land from the evils of "Mardi Gras" and "Jerry Springer".

The technology is great, the cause may even be just, but it's not a simple case of we're good and they're bad. Ffej

Guest - Your metaphorical statement rings pretty hollow to those of us whose nation was peremptorily attacked with appalling and deadly results by agents of a vague and hateful ideology supported by substantial logistic support from these "local freedom fighters" and their ilk.

If this "large industrial country" employs so called deviltry or any other method to defend itself from future attack it is perfectly justified.

I applaud our development and use of defensive weapons that will save lives on the battlefield. This is one such. If it gives some "unfair" advantage to the technologically superior party, so be it. Technological superiority has in recent history has generally been accompanied by a level of restraint in violent conflicts, the current situation in Libya notwithstanding.

Perhaps even stronger technology will deter ideological lunatic fringes from attacking straw men rather than dealing with the real problems, a process that the world is currently watching. To their credit these real heroes have mustered the strength to rise against the totalitarian thieving leadership they have endured in the past half century. I'm glad their anger is not directed too much to us, at least anymore than we may deserve. For their cause is just regardless of how they finally decide how they choose to be governed in the future.

A fight against a just cause is a tough slog and the fighter carries a handicap that can't be ignored.

"Afghanistan and Iraq" weren't the attackers or the financiers of the 911 barbarity.

I was trying to point out the cynical use of emotionally loaded language. To me it seems quite "Orwellian" to use such noble words as "Patriot", "Freedom" or in this case "defenders" to sell dubious policy or spruke weapons systems.

Don't get me wrong, I fully support secular western democracy and although the reason coalition forces went into Afghanistan & Iraq may have been flawed, now we're there we have to win (at almost any cost). Anything that helps our side to do that is to be applauded. But remember, the guys on the other side are also bravely committed to saving their country and way of life as well.

Democracy relies on the citizens being well informed, people or agencies who try to manipulate the truth with "weasel words" shouldn't be trusted. And finally, the "justice" of a cause is determined retrospectively by the winners.

Ffej, sometimes masquerading as Guest.

Ed, I wanted to reply to this.... this.... Jack&^s!, but you said it far better than I could. People like this "guest", who is so proud of his/her statement that they will not even login and put their name with their words, absolutely sicken me. I suppose it be better if we just sent everything that we have at our disposal to the enemy so they can have a "fair" chance. It is these kind of innovations that allow the brave men and women of our armed forces to do the things they do. There is a reason that we are #1, and it all comes back to the Constitution and our core beliefs and we fight for them. People like our beloved "Guest" abuse our rights and blemish our reputation around the world. They are the reason that we have the "Jerry Springer"s and the other crap that people around the world see. I have traveled a lot out of country, and foreigners do not think the horrible things about us that we are told. Some advice to our dear "Guest". Why don't you go spend some time with the widows of the men that have died because of people that think like you. They died to give the same freedom that you enjoy, to people they will never know. Explain to them why you think we should not innovate, just so the "FREEDOM FIGHTERS" can have a chance. "Guest", you want our men and women home, give our them them the tools and training they need, to do the unspeakable job they have been sent to do. Either that, or SHUT your mouth and get out of their way.

Oh, don't be so hard on Ffej. He's a good guy. He just forgot to login. We just don't always agree. I was referring to Afghanistan and the Taliban, not Iraq.

I never though invading Iraq the 2nd time was a good idea. I'll admit I got kind of caught up in the success of the initial Iraq invasion. That didn't last for me. It's a good thing the hubris got washed out of the neocons over their erstwile success in Iraq. It's just sad that we got trapped for so long that a whole lot of our people either died or had their lives royally screwed up. Whatever improvements have come in Iraq were not worth that price.

The Taliban supported Al Kaeda before 911. We have no reason not to believe some of them won't support Al Kaeda again if not already doing so; current media reports notwithstanding. In my book that makes them the enemy and a serious threat to us. Should we still be in Afghanistan fighting them? Good question which to me has little to do with the fact that they are our enemy. The real questions to me center around whether we think our strategy in that part of the world makes it a good investment in our security. I am very much inclined to rely on our military and government leaders to make the call on that. And I recognize that they are even running a little blind in their effort. But it will take a lot of new information to convince me that the Taliban is still not a threat to us.

Well as a famous man once said

"The best was to distract a country is to start a war somewhere far away, send the young poor off to die, and say it is in a good cause"

I am sorry but it the large scheme of things, 9/11 was a joke w.r.t. the numbers...

As Stalin said,

"One death is a tragedy while a million is a statistic"

The goat farmer who faces a force of advanced technology is a true hero. I know that is America came up here, I have a gun locker and ammo ready for them.

American's have the right to have weapons, not to shot up each other but to overthrow the govt. if need be, It has been 100 years overdue for another revolution.

kwoznia - In your post I see both the elements of a prophet and those of a fool. The latter in your willingness to die a solitary and heroic but statistically meaningless death. I think all of us "individualists" tend to underrate one advantage that 10 million years of evolution has given to our intelligent species, the ability to act together in concert.

BTW, and this is more "on topic" than it may seem, I just came off listening to an interview of Michael Scheuer about his new book on Osama Bin Laden. We may not like his objectivity and conclusions. They often run counter to established dogma. But he has a lot of interesting things to say and offers compelling reasons to think critically about what he presents.
