Schools Should Teach Kids More About How Science is Done

The prop, a cylinder with two pieces of string running through it, briefly took center stage here at a packed symposium on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education, part of the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Yes. The more they know about the scientific method the more they will respect it and not treat science as just another belief system competing with one they may already have. To me it is as important that our citizens respect the validity of science as it is for them to know enough science for success (and safety) in their everyday lives.

But please do not make a big deal out of it. There is a segment of our voters that are very unhappy with the very idea of public schools and what they teach let alone how they are performing. This demographic has a very significant proportion of people who have deep antithepy toward areas of science that conflict with their beliefs. And they vote. Better to not inflame their passions any more than they are now inflamed over other social issues.

In other words do it. Just don't rub their noses in it.
