Robot Assisted Prostate Surgery? Uhh--You First.

Posted March 31, 2007 5:08 PM

From Crave: The gadget blog:

Surgeons are using a four armed robot to perform prostate surgery. The procedure is called the da Vinci Prostatectomy, "a new, less-invasive approach to prostate removal," according to the Swedish Medical Center. Actually, it's no joke; an estimated 230,000 men in the US are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and the da Vinci Surgical System promises to help surgeons perform the surgery with greater precision while speeding patient recovery.

I had prostate surgery using the da Vinci machine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. It went perfectly with Zero after-effects, no ED and no incontinence.

This isn't exactly the latest news. The robot-assist is a cutting edge technique that's been around for a few years and is also used for other types of necessary surgery. Much faster recovery, little scarring, in and out of the hospital in 24 hours. My 'tectomy was in NYC nine months ago and the only problem was getting my insurance to approve coverage.

Actually, "robots" are being used more and more in surgical procedures. The major problem in prostate surgery is to save the major nerves that pass thru the organ.

the company making the 'davinci' robot -Intuitive Surgical...is doing quite well. There approach is to insist on thorough training of the Dr's purchasing the device, intensive after sale support and service--making this an exciting tool. It significantly reduces overall cost by dramatically lowering hospital stay related costs, complications, infections, and post surgery trauma---all big $$ items insurance companies appreciate--AS well as improving 'outcomes' and patient recovery times--the things WE are interested in.
