How Will Apparel Companies Score?

Posted March 07, 2011 12:00 PM by Sharkles

Thanks to the ever-increasing amount of information on environmental-issues available to consumers, manufacturers and industry groups have had to adapt their processes to meet sustainability goals. A group called the Sustainable Apparel Coalition hopes that their new database will shed even more light on the environmental-impact of clothing manufacturing. The database will include information regarding the components and procedures involved in the manufacturing process to give each garment a sustainability score.

The New York Times estimates that Americans spent about $340 billion on clothing and shoes last year. What these consumers don't realize is that the components needed to create a single piece of clothing come from mills and plants all over the world.

By giving consumers more insight into the supply on fabrics, zippers, dyes, and other components, the Coalition hopes that they'll make informed choices and gain a deeper understanding of the impact that clothing manufacturing has on the planet.

Will sustainability scoring influence your apparel choices?

In many factories waste water may be drained into rivers.lakes etc without treatment. Also employees may not get Provident fund, gratuity, bonus, compensation for unlawful dismissal,no social security, good food/tea not available during working hours etc. Human aspects should not be overlooked in preference to environmental aspects. After all for whom is the environment, is it for humans or for trees and animals?.

I have a close friend who works for a wool garment, blanket manufacturing company. They just gave up on trying to use "green" dyes. The dyes are more expensive, inconsistent, from batch to batch, and fade. They spent over two years on this project trying to go greener.

You can tell the American people all you want but its the manufacturers that bear the brunt of this. If your customers find a product does not please them after several washings then you have lost a customer.
