In Centralia, Washington, a new bill has set the phasing-out
of coal-fired power in motion. By the end of December 2020, one coal boiler at
TransAlta Corp will be completely shut down. Another will be closed by no later
than the end of December 2025.
An agreement with the state will require TransAlta Corp to
install additional air pollution technologies to assist in reducing emissions
of nitrogen oxides. TransAlta Corp will also donate $30 million to a community
investment fund for projects related to energy efficiency. An additional $25
million will be given to an "energy technology transition fund," which supports
innovation environmental technologies and companies within Washington State.
Stephen Snyder, TransAlta Chief Executive, released a
statement in response saying that the legislation "meets our commitment to a
low-carbon future through transition from coal to gas in Washington, significantly
reduces our environmental risk and allows us to provide fair shareholder value
through favorable long-term contracts while protecting jobs and the economy of
the local community."
Do you think we'll see more states/companies begin to
phase-out coal-fired power?
