Coal Phase-Out Agreement Reached in Washington State

Posted March 09, 2011 10:00 AM by Sharkles

In Centralia, Washington, a new bill has set the phasing-out of coal-fired power in motion. By the end of December 2020, one coal boiler at TransAlta Corp will be completely shut down. Another will be closed by no later than the end of December 2025.

An agreement with the state will require TransAlta Corp to install additional air pollution technologies to assist in reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides. TransAlta Corp will also donate $30 million to a community investment fund for projects related to energy efficiency. An additional $25 million will be given to an "energy technology transition fund," which supports innovation environmental technologies and companies within Washington State.

Stephen Snyder, TransAlta Chief Executive, released a statement in response saying that the legislation "meets our commitment to a low-carbon future through transition from coal to gas in Washington, significantly reduces our environmental risk and allows us to provide fair shareholder value through favorable long-term contracts while protecting jobs and the economy of the local community."

Do you think we'll see more states/companies begin to phase-out coal-fired power?

It's ironic that this blog was posted on CR4 on the same day that this story hit the CR4 news feed:

Nice warm & fuzzy idea, but how does it cut down on the pollution coming from China as they start a new coal-fired plant every week, and the winds carry it across the Pacific?

Another article here at Publicola.

Another contributing factor is probably the closing of the Centralia Coal Mine. The powerplant has railed in coal from Wyoming and Montana for the last 5 years.

Phasing out coal plants is interesting and may help foster new/cleaner power generation stations.

What's interesting to me, though, is that it appears that the state is "forcing" a public utility to extract funds from users (private citizens) for state directed projects. How much lower would the user's power costs be if the state wasn't extorting money through the law making process.

I don't care how the pols manipulate this IT'S A TAX on the citizenry.

Grrrrr...
