Should Food Mix with Pharmaceuticals?

Posted March 12, 2011 6:59 AM

Nutraceuticals are a profitable criss-cross of food and pharmaceuticals, but are the claims of these products confusing to consumers? Food giant Nestlé is committing to health science through the acquisition of a small UK-based company that creates foods to treat certain health problems, from kidney disease to obesity to cancer. Is this a practical collaboration between food manufacturers and drug companies? Or, is this an unhealthy blurring of the line between nutrition and medicine?

Should there be a line between nutrition and medicine? If food can cure or prevent disease, that's a good thing. Nutrients or nutraceuticals have a much lower risk profile than drugs. So a nutritional approach to medicine is a good thing.

I'm still waiting for a food label that reveals everything. Natural flavors? Spices? What natural flavors, what is it? What spices? It's all marketing, this is just a new twist. You can't eat diet candy bars with a pharmaceutical additive to curb cravings!

It has been around for a while. My son had a prescription energy drink while going into kidney failure.

There is way too much arrogance on the part of scientists about our understanding of the nature of life and it's mechanical operations in physical forms. Too many times we forge ahead in endeavors like this without knowing the full implications of what we are doing. There are subjects about health that are still hotly debated, after decades. The role of cholesterol in health and disease is just one. Some ideas may pan out O.K. But just like Microsoft's OS's, the public at large is generally where the "final" beta testing occurs.
