T-Box Concept To Capture Wind Energy From Trains

Posted March 31, 2011 10:42 AM

From Gizmag:

As anyone living near railway tracks will tell you, speeding trains generate quite a bit of wind as they whoosh past. Industrial designers Qian Jiang and Alessandro Leonetti Luparini have come up with a device that's installed between the sleepers on a track, and as the train passes overhead, the wind drives a turbine to generate electricity. The T-box devices could be placed along railway or subway lines, and make good use of an otherwise wasted resource.

Ok...so trains are modeled aerodynamically with normal tracks and sleepers underneath. Will changing that part of the model increase or decrease the aerodynamic efficiency of the trains.

If it decreases then you are paying for the recovered energy by paying for the extra energy it takes to move the train. I worry this is kinda like putting a windmill on top of your hybrid car to generate electricity to charge your batteries.

Don't have time to read article...this might be covered in it.

For every good idea there are 1000 bad ones that are impractical, unworkable, environmentally un-friendly, etc. This one isn't a good idea (see numerous previous threads on CR4 regarding wind and energy harvesting for more details).

I don't see why more people are not interested in fitting electric generators to exercise equipment instead. It makes far more sense (and a better business model).

Yeah.. like an exercise set that charges your electric bike?

If you don't exercise at night or in the morn???.. you'll be huffing it the rest of your commute!!..

(offer applies only where applicable)

...as for the op... incogitable!

That would be interesting. If you have a long hill on the way to work, you could charge up the bike by putting it on a rig and riding it in the evening for fitness, then use the boost to get up the hill. Of course I would try to turn that electric motor into a generator when I wanted to slow down too. (don't seem to recall wanting to slow down on a bicycle unless I was about to hit something!)
