Sim-Drive's Sim-Lei Electric Car Achieves 207-Mile Driving Range In Japan

Posted April 01, 2011 10:04 AM

From Engadget:

Manufacturers are constantly optimising the driving range for electric vehicles, and sure enough, a Japanese startup recently made a breakthrough with its first prototype. Dubbed the SIM-LEI, this cute four-seater from SIM-Drive sips juice off a Toshiba 24.9kWh lithium ion battery, and can go from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in just 4.8 seconds, with maximum speed topping at 150km/h (93mph).

Nice. And it looks like part of the extended range is due to a very aerodynamic looking shape.

The shallowness of the comments astounds me, attitudes like that doubtless contribute to the decline of the automotive industry in those guys countries.
If they'd seen the price of petrol in the UK they'd want one now...jus like wot I does.

I think we are dealing with people who haven't lived with a small high performance car.

A few that I've had:

1000cc Abarth (Fiat) 600d

~1450cc Imp (Roger Nathan's Flying Imp)

1000cc Fiat (Abarth) 850

2000cc (1977) Honda CVCC 140hp

I had the first three in the late 60's.

The Civic was in the late 80's. It ran out of gear about 170K. Couldn't floor it below 70K without wheel spin. And it got about 40mpg (5.9l/100km)

Nice... Sounds like a suitable car for a cat

Who in their right mind would drive that tiny car 150 Km/H?

Run over a cat squirrel dog pebble and flip it over at that speed.

With that V low ground clearance and a heavy battery in the floor it probably sticks to the road better than the usual wallowing American crap offerings from the US.

In an attempt to learn more about the car, I followed the article as far back as I could. The car shown is Development Model Number One. I could find no reference to the road stickiness factor of the car, or the lack thereof.

Most of the usual wallowing American crap offerings from the US, as well as those from Japan, Germany, Italy, China or France are also capable of exceeding 150KmH... this speed is equally ludicrous in any small chassis lightweight car.

See, I didn't mention those from the UK.

My favorite tiny car I've owned was a 1987 Chevy Turbo sprint. 1.0 L turbocharged and inter-cooled. Could beat a corvette off the line...for about 100 feet anyway. But it was nimble and quick and got 38 mpg if you drove it like you stole it... and 48 if you babied it.

It topped out at an electronically limited 120 mph. Proven on the German Autobahn. Ran it from the north sea to the Swiss border at 120 mph. Stopping only for food and gas. Wasn't even near the redline in 5th gear at that speed.

the five speeds were weak as I wore two out at about 50K miles each time. But they were cheap too and I'd buy another in an instant for that price if they ever made them again.
