The Ellsworth Ride

Posted April 04, 2007 5:31 PM

From electro^plankton:

Leonardo Da Vinci thought of the NuVinci hub in 1490, a new type of transmission we called CVT (continuously variable planetary transmission) designed for bikes and small vehicles. The system uses a set of rotating spheres to vary the speed ratio much smoother than the standard chain and gear system. Mountain biking company Ellsworth plans to release the world's first CVT bike this year. "The Ride" as it's called is made of ultra lightweight aluminum, has dual adjusting handle bars and a unique open frame design for stability.

Great application for the CVpT.

There was a Graham continuously variable transmission sold in the US some 40 to 50 years ago. Used tapered steel rollers inside a ring or rings to achieve variable speed. Required a 'Special' friction oil.
