A New Solution for Tracking Airline Maintenance?

Posted April 18, 2011 11:31 AM by Sharkles

A partnership between Boeing and Fujitsu promises to bring a new inventory and maintenance tool to airline ground crews, which will ensure a plane is ready for flight. The new tool is said to be able to assess a plane as quickly as the crew can walk around or down a passenger aisle.

A launch customer is expected to be announced sometime this week for Component Management Optimization (CMO). CMO will be developed with six initial products, first being emergency equipment management. Later CMO products will be developed to manage retables and repairables, airframe degradation, propulsion systems, and essential cabin options. Program manager Phil Coop said that the entire program will be completed by the end of the year.

Do you think CMO tools like the one from Boeing and Fujitsu will be an improvement over current, inspection practices, particularly in light of the recent Southwest Airlines incident?

"The new tool is said to be able to assess a plane as quickly as the crew can walk around or down a passenger aisle."

If assess means a complete inspection of all elements... WHY IS THIS NOT IN PLACE TODAY? Or last week? Or perhaps earlier?

However, I would guess assess means something else. Perhaps it means an indication that elements are due for inspection.

What is a retable, as it relates to aircraft?

Component Management Optimization (CMO) is being initially developed for managing the aircraft emergency equipments using RFID chips wirelessly transmitting the maintenance and performance status

. It will later be extended to manage rotables-equipment with serial numbers

Airframe degradation, propulsion systems and essential cabin management options also are planned for CMO.

The recent South West incident was apparently due to Airframe degradation and development of CMO technology will definitely offer an unprecedented improvement..
