RC Car Runs On Soda Can Rings

Posted April 18, 2011 3:12 PM

From Engadget:

Many a future engineer was inspired by Back to the Future's Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown, and not just because he proved that unkempt eccentrics could truly change the world. No, he also pioneered Mr. Fusion, the coffee maker/cold fusion reactor that turned garbage into energy. And while we're still waiting for cold fusion and time travel to become a reality, today we're all one step closer to waste-powered cars. A pair of Spanish engineers have recently unveiled the dAlH2Orean (see what they did there?), a R/C car that runs on aluminum. Dropping a few soda can tabs into a tank of sodium hydroxide produces enough hydrogen to power the little speedster for 40 minutes - at almost 20mph.

Hmmmm...so let's take a recyclable commodity and return it to salt form...then use even more energy to turn it back to a metallic state to use again. While we're at it, let's use a notified hazardous material as a reagent. After all, what could go wrong?

Yup, we need to get this scaled up immediately...not!

You are missing the point entirely, which is that...errr...ummmm.
Boys like playing with RC cars wheeee zoooom. They like drinking beer too which provides a ready supply of ring pull tabs.

So you'd be drunk in charge of an RC* car with a caustic soda solution in it.

I ask again: what could go wrong?!

Nanny has spoken: put down the RC car and go outside and play with your crossbow. Much safer!

*Took me while to work out what RC meant...the article kinda implies this could be a substitute for petrol/diesel. Far better would be solar / clockwork powered RC cars. Or maybe potato powered?

Maybe their RC car experiment is primitive but the base concept is brilliant.

Fuel cell technology is promising but the current challenge is with offsite hydrogen generation, storage and distribution. Metal & liquid acid is much easier to store & transport, and should have a much higher energy density than hydrogen gas.

These guys only proved the concept is viable. Now our job is to refine the logistics.

I get about 30 - 40 cents a pound for my scrap aluminum so in avoided fuel cost I wonder what that works out too?

Also Sodium Hydroxide is a common unregulated compound that can be found at any hardware and grocery store under the more common name Red Devil drain cleaner which is 100% sodium hydroxide.
