The EV Tipping Point

Posted April 30, 2011 8:28 AM

A recent Deloitte LLP survey finds a majority of Americans would consider buying an electric vehicle (EV) when fuel prices reach $5.00/gal. Most of the European consumers surveyed would consider an EV purchase when fuel costs approach 2.00€/l. Consumers from all regions surveyed demand a veicle range of 200-300 mile, expectations not met by current market offerings. What would be your tipping point for an EV purchase and what are your performance expectations?

I'm 40 miles from work, that means 100 mile range minimum.

And I don't mean 100 mile maximum range, I mean 100 miles when; it's night (headlights on), it's cold (heater on), it's humid (air conditioning on to clear the windows), it's raining (wipers on) and I'm bored (stereo blasting). And don't forget the heated leather seats like I have in my diesel TDI. These are the requirements for me.

I've not yet seen a minimum mileage number for any electric car.
