Is Green Shale Gas Turning Black?

Posted May 22, 2011 6:00 AM

Shale gas is being heralded as the next best thing for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Pundits claim that converting electrical generation from coal to gas will cut emissions by a third. In the U.S., shale gas is also touted as a worthwhile solution to ever-increasing transportation needs and rising oil prices. Is it that simple? Maybe not. Cornell University researchers claim that methane leakage from shale gas development projects will make the greenhouse gas footprint for natural gas 20% higher than coal, and maybe twice as great. Should we believe them?

I certainly don't know anything about the true details of shale gas drilling and recovery, but it seems to me that, after having invested significant funds in acquiring the leases and drilling production wells, the exploration companies would install tight well piping systems to protect their investment.

Maybe we will hear from someone in the industry who can explain the facts from his point of view and experience.
