Whale Watching

Posted June 14, 2011 8:50 AM

Australian scientists are studying the behavioral response of Humpback whales to seismic surveys. This four year project will try to determine how much surveys negatively influence whale behavior, and how survey methods can be modified to minimize their effects on whale populations. The U.S. Navy recently won a court battle allowing its submarines to conduct sonar exercises off the West Coast, much to the surprise of whale supporters and environmentalists. It's a big ocean. Assuming this study finds that seismic surveys harm the whales, do whales join polar bears in shaping the path of global energy policy?

will try to determine how much surveys negatively influence whale behavior,

Please keep your lead-ins accurate and do not include your personal bias until the results have determined if there is any negative influence.

It's always easier to ding someone else than to express an intelligent opinion. The U.S. Navy has already gone to court over this. Doesn't mean it's true, but how about staying on point?
