Are You Going Wireless or Using More Cable?

Posted June 17, 2011 7:39 AM

A recent study found that the average U.S. home has more than 550 feet of cable connecting devices such as televisions, computers, alarms, and even wireless routers. While many of these products have wireless interfaces, the study found that homes require five times more cabling than they did in the 1970s. Is this true for you? Are you using more cable than you were ten years ago? Do you think you'll ever be completely wireless?

When most of the associated economics of going wireless becomes within the reasonable capabilities of the majority, then going wireless may become a consideration prior to cablings. When most of the wireless related technical issues or problems had been addressed, problems such as interference, security, range, standardization, etc., had been resolved then going into wireless may prevail and become popular.

Although wireless is extremely convenient, it generally adds to price and decreases efficiency. I know data transfer rates via my home network are detrimentally slower over wireless rather than Ethernet. This is mainly due to my router, but if I were to get one where the wireless transfer rate was increased, the price would increase greatly as well. Another thing with wireless technology is how vulnerable it leaves you. Many more recent routers and such have protection where you need to physically be connected to it before you can connect to it wirelessly, but many still don't; which leaves opportunity for someone else steal your connection. Yes, you can add passwords and such to protect from the intrusion of others, but hackers are finding ways around everything now-a-days, just ask Sony.
