LulzSec Hackers Finally Explain Themselves

Posted June 17, 2011 1:21 PM

From Forbes - Tech:

The mischievous hacking group LulzSec has posted an unusually serious statement to mark their 1,000th tweet, and for the first time it explains in some detail why they've gone on a month-and-a-half long hacking spree claiming the likes of PBS, SonyPictures.com, and an FBI affiliate as victims.

The most disturbing thing is the mocking tone of their quotes. At some level, these people do think they are providing a service. I know that some companies do have employees whose job is to try to break into their own servers, so they can locate weaknesses and correct them. But it seems the better expertise is mostly outside of the legitimate community.

Is the overhead of encryption so much that companies are just lazy about using it? And is that part of the mocking tone of the quotes from LulzSec? Are they disgusted that companies do little to protect customers personal data? We can only hope that some of these people do have ultimately good intentions. They could offer to do this openly as a service to any company who desires their expertise. But since they aren't, I do wonder about the purity of their motives.

If they are only trying to gain access to disclose weakness, maybe they are truly whistle-blowers serving the public good.

(I do note there have been discussions about data security and encryption on CR4 before.)
