Researchers Explore Scrapping Internet

Posted April 13, 2007 3:38 PM

From LiveScience.com:

NEW YORK (AP) — Although it has already taken nearly four decades to get this far in building the Internet, some university researchers with the federal government's blessing want to scrap all that and start over. The idea may seem unthinkable, even absurd, but many believe a "clean slate'' approach is the only way to truly address security, mobility and other challenges that have cropped up since UCLA professor Leonard Kleinrock helped supervise the first exchange of meaningless test data between two machines on Sept. 2, 1969.

One of the reasons the government wants a new national network may involve interest in propagandizing. Keep an eye on government. It will take power that you don't actively retain.

The only way to get onto the Internet without fear of your compute getting trashed by micreants will be to have positive ID of everyone onthe network - until that happens, it will continue to be a free-for-all and real commerce will be slow to progress. If that means scrapping what we have and starting over, I am all for it.

Don't fool yourself. There will never be a network where everyone has a positive ID. As long as there is money to be made or mischief to be done, the miscreants will find a way to get in and remain anonymous.

The only thing that the government will accomplish is to mess things up.

The Internet is a big mess. I have a separate home computer I rely on for my important stuff and it is not on the Internet.

Popular Science had an article as to how a new internet could be created that would so unattractive to hack, people would not waste their time. So maybe it is possible to have a clean internet. I think that when the current internet was conceived, the problems it now faces were not anticipated. The security solutions available seem makeshift and are almost as annoying and time consuming as the problems they are intended to protect us from.

Personally I am about half convinced that much of the problems we have with the internet is being put there by the companies selling the software to protect us from them. I feel like a small business owner being shaken down by the local crime gang to buy "protection".

The real problem is one of numbers. No matter what system is put in place of the present internet, the large number of people who will find ways around the code and firewalls, will always over whelm the design teams. It is just a matter of time.
