The linked article is one of the things that bothers me about how Science is covered by the press. There are several magnets built and in use today that produce a higher magnetic field than this 25 Tesla magnet. The reporter differentiates this achievement from other higher field magnets by using the modifier "split magnet". At no point is this term "split magnet" even attempted to be explained in construction or useful attribute from other magnets. I don't blame this reporter, because I searched through several "split magnet" related threads and none of the threads I found defined what is a "split magnet" or why is it helpful to do other science.

Kudos to the Florida team that achieved this!

The "non-split magnet's" have a hole in the center where the testing is accomplished.

The "Split Magnets" are held apart mechanically against the strong magnetic field to allow a gap for testing.

Or at least that's what I got out of the article.
